About Iris Agate

Iris Agate is a translucent to semi-transparent variety of agate known for its remarkable optical effect. When strong light passes through its extremely fine banded structure, it can produce beautiful rainbow-like colors.

The name “Iris” comes from the Greek goddess of the rainbow, reflecting the stone’s stunning spectrum of colors.

The rainbow effect is best observed under a strong point light source. Its naturally formed microscopic layers diffract and interfere with light, creating flashes of blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet depending on the angle.

Compared with ordinary agate, Iris Agate requires exceptionally fine and closely spaced banding to display this phenomenon, which makes attractive specimens especially collectible.

The rainbow effect may not always be visible under normal room lighting. It appears most clearly when the slice is illuminated from the correct angle with a strong light source—one of the fascinating surprises created by nature.
